What are NEETs and why are they so important.

A NEET is a young person, typically between 16 and 24 who is Not in Education, Employment or Training. This group represents a critical focus for both policymakers and communities as NEET status often highlights deeper social and economic challenges.

Government departments monitor NEET rates closely as they serve as a key indicator of youth well being an national economic health. High NEET levels are often linked to serious issues such as youth unemployment, educational disengagement, mental health struggles, social exclusion and gaps in essential skills required in todays markets.

Reducing the number of NEETs is a priority across multiple sectors, not just for the benefit of the young people themselves, but for society as a whole. Young people who are not supported into education, employment, or training risk long-term

disadvantages, including lower earnings, poorer health outcomes, and reduced life opportunities.

From an economic perspective, NEETs can place a strain on public resources while not contributing productively to the economy. More importantly, failing to support and upskill these young people means missing out on their potential to drive innovation, fill workforce shortages, and strengthen future growth.
